Hi Frank, As I understand it this is exactly what is intended by the arrangement of colour to demonstrate light. So apparently in clear conditions the near horizon ( hills here) become dark to almost black as they reach to the sky which conveniently is shown as a sunrise allowing the contrast to be almost black and white( black then logically appears nearer compared to white) As a result of this distance creation the brain is persuaded there is something just beyond the hills. How much of this is driven by seeing it for real and knowing there is always something over the horizon through travel I have no idea. I would say I found it compelling to paint this as I have always enjoyed seeing horizons 😀
